All About Online Therapy in California

Difficulty leaving the house?  Let us come to you.  Whether you’re working from home, tired of fighting traffic or sheltering in place to help slow the spread of COVID, it doesn’t mean you can’t see a therapist!

At In Touch Individual & Family Counseling, I’m proud to offer online therapy to my clients in Tustin, Irvine, the greater Orange County area, and all of California. This page helps answer your questions about online therapy in California, how we can meet online, and how to get started.

What is Online Therapy?

Online Therapy or Telehealth allows us to conduct a therapy session through audio and video conference over the internet instead of meeting in person.  If you are busy and short on time, all you need is a desktop, laptop, tablet, or mobile device (iOS or Android)—it’s your choice!

What Are The Benefits of Online Therapy?

Convenience:

Online Therapy or Telehealth allows us to connect anywhere with secure and convenient appointments that save you time and hassle.  There’s no need to deal with traffic when you can schedule and attend your appointments directly from a laptop or mobile device.  If you plan to use a desktop or laptop, relax because there is nothing to download before your appointment.

Fewer Missed Appointments:

Although therapy might be important to you, sometimes life throws stuff at us like heavy traffic or an end-of-day meeting that runs late.  These unexpected obstacles can cause missed appointments, disrupting the flow of good therapy.  In contrast, online therapy or Telehealth gives you the option of attending your meeting from wherever you are—at the office or from the comforts of home.

Ease of access:

Sometimes, a busy schedule isn’t the only barrier to therapy.  Sometimes a new baby or difficulty finding childcare is the difference between getting to therapy or skipping it.  Other times, you may be traveling and unable to meet in person.  Telehealth conferencing provides an all-access pass so we can connect regardless of your location.

Privacy:

Our video appointment platform is 100% HIPAA compliant, safe, and secure.

A Calmer, More Relaxing Experience:

The last thing we want to do is stress and interference while attending therapy.  For example, if you live in Orange County, putting your life on hold during a long drive or facing rush hour traffic can be a deal-breaker.  Online Therapy or Telehealth can eliminate that stress and make life easier.

Just like in-person therapy, online counseling can help you with a wide range of challenges, such as:

During therapy, we can work together as a team to put an end to destructive conversations so you can experience a lifetime of love!  My ultimate goal is to create a safe and supportive zone that makes talking about your situation simple and effective.

How Does Online Therapy Work?

Some therapists use Zoom, while others use Doxy as their online therapy platforms.  Here at In Touch Individual and Family Counseling, we use a secure, HIPAA compliant video platform called Simple Practice.  With Simple Practice, my online therapy clients can attend their sessions remotely from anywhere on any device (i.e., smartphone, laptop, desktop, or tablet).

And that’s just part of the story!

You won’t need any fancy tech skills to attend our meeting, but you will need a good internet connection.  About 10 minutes before your appointment, you will receive an automated email appointment reminder with the link to join.  Simply click the link at the meeting time, and you will be ushered to your video session. Unlike other platforms, with Simple Practice, there is nothing to update or download.  And for your safety and privacy, none of the appointments can be recorded.

If you are having trouble accessing your session or if you aren’t sure what to do next, just send me a text.  I will walk you through the steps and troubleshoot as needed.

Online Therapy in California FAQs

Some people may feel a bit awkward or anxious the first time they try online therapy in California – that’s normal, and it gets easier once you’ve started.  But, if video doesn’t work for you, phone sessions are also an option.

Feel free to contact me to get some help with problem-solving a space to do online therapy!  For example, some of my clients use their headphones while others sit in their car, boat, or RV during the session.

Billing for online therapy and Telehealth works the same as in-person therapy. Please note that I do not work directly with insurance companies. If you would like to pursue partial reimbursement through your PPO plan, click or tap this link.

Contact me by phone or email as soon as you notice something isn’t working – I’m here for you.  In most cases, technical issues are resolved by simply refreshing your screen, closing internet tabs, and ensuring your camera and headphones are working.

If excessive stress or communication problems are holding you back, I can help you navigate these feelings and discover a clear path forward. I would love to answer any questions about the process during a free consultation.

My office is located in Old Town Tustin, but thanks to online therapy, I can work with you anywhere in the state of California.
